This was Billie Holiday's penultimate album, recorded when her body was telling her enough was enough. During the sessions with arranger Ray Ellis she was drinking vodka neat, as if it were tap water. Despite her ravaged voice (the sweetness had long gone), she was still an incredible singer. The feeling and tension she manages to put into almost every track set this album as one of her finest.

"You Don't Know What Love Is" by Billie Holiday and Ray Ellis and His Orchestra is a cover of Chet Baker's "You Don't Know What Love Is". Listen to both songs on WhoSampled, the ultimate database of sampled music, cover songs and remixes.

Lady In Satin is not for the squirmish; not even, perhaps, for alot of Holiday fans. But if you don't mind a front row seat to the closing act of the tragic opera that was Holiday's life; if you can find beauty in sorrow and hope in pain, this CD will unveil a new meaning for the term "soul music" /5().

Billie Holiday, Ray Ellis Orchestra – You Don't Know What Love Is. Unlike Lady in Satin, Billie Holiday had a lighter string orchestra, minus the choir, and more horns, including a saxophone and a more jazz like feeling.
